The Carson City Silver Dollar Story
Two of the miners who couldn't find gold in the Nevada foothills stumbled into the next best thing! Silver was found around the Carson City area in 1859 in what became the most famous silver mine of the West– the Comstock Lode. Out West prospectors and mining operations in Nevada faced difficult issues of getting their gold and silver bullion to market. They were forced to carry the unrefined bullion on mules or in wagons over snow-covered, difficult mountain terrain, through dangerous outlaw and Indian territory. Back then, the nearest mint facility to convert bullion into coins was hundreds of miles away in San Francisco. Meanwhile, in the booming Nevada frontier towns, there was a shortage of coined money. Miners often paid for drinks in saloons with a “pinch of gold” – all the gold a man could squeeze between his thumb and index finger. Greedy saloon owners hired bartenders with the largest hands they could find to make extra profits on the exchange. By 1858, Abe Curry had founded Carson City and named it after the Wild West hero and Indian fighter Kit Carson. A few years later, he successfully lobbied Congress to approve a branch mint in Carson City, Nevada to solve both the need for coins and to avoid the dangerous hauling of raw bullion. The Carson City Mint struck its first official U.S. gold coins in 1870.
