Saint Gaudens Gold Coins
1907-1933

The new designs for gold coinage created in 1907 were intended to replace the Liberty Head Series of designs used since 1849.

To capture the essence of the early 1900's American spirit, one of the country's best known sculptors, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was enlisted to create what has become his most famous work of art, the $20 gold piece named in his honor.

Affordable Classic U.S. Gold
The $20 Saint-Gaudens is the is first classic gold coin that most new collectors start with due to availability, high quality, and prices that are still well under $1,000 for mint state condition examples. These magnificent coins are American antiques from 75 to 100 years old.

Naturally, Better Date, Rare Date, and higher grades command much higher prices.  But for most new collectors, under $1,000 examples make since for up to 100-year-old gold coins that contain nearly an ounce of gold.

Everyone Should Own a Saint
Listed below are two different approaches to collecting Saint-Gaudens.  The first is the high end approach for Serious Collectors and recommends acquiring the 1907 High Relief.

For new collectors, acquiring the 1908 "No Motto" version with the missing "In God We Trust" along with any other Popular Date Saint gives you two nice examples to compare and contrast.  The photo at right shows where to look for the Motto.

Saint Gaudens High Relief
There has never been a more beautiful or more uniquely minted coin in U.S. history than the 1907 Saint Gaudens High Relief.

Struck up to 9 times each on super presses, the coin exhibits some of the remarkable fine details ever captured on the face of a U.S. coin.

The high relief was so difficult to consistently mint, and so costly, that the 1907 Saint Gaudens were uniquely a one year mintage. This is a date reserved for Super Collectors and Numismatists.

Saint Gaudens Motto - No Motto

"Notorious" 1908 Saint Gaudens No Motto

When first released in 1907, the new Saint-Gaudens coins enjoyed very little circulation among the American public.  Back then $1.00 a day was an average working man's pay, so $20 would represent a month's wages.

However,  once newspapers ran articles denouncing the new coins removal of "God We Trust" motto, there was a huge public outcry.  In 1908, the designs were changed and the motto added back leaving coin collectors with two very interesting varieties to collect.
